Experience the Mystical Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang by Jeep
Upper Mustang is a breathtaking trekking destination in Nepal, known for its ancient monasteries, mystical caves, and striking landscapes. Often called the "forbidden kingdom," it was opened to trekkers in 1992 but still feels like a secluded, ancient world. Located north of the Annapurna region near the Tibetan border, Upper Mustang is one of the last strongholds of untouched Tibetan culture. What makes this trip unique is, that whilst traveling through an unmatched landscape and culture, you do so during one of the most magical cultural festivals in the world: the ancient Tibetan Tiji festival!
The Tiji Festival 2025, a vibrant and spiritually significant event, will take place in the mystical region of Upper Mustang, Nepal. Rooted in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the Tiji Festival, or Tenchi, is a three-day celebration held in the ancient walled city of Lo-Manthang. This trip is scheduled from start in Kathmandu on May 18 to May 31, 2025, the festival starts May 24th and commemorates the victory of Buddha's incarnation, Dorje Jono, over a demon that caused destruction and suffering in the Mustang region.
The festival's name, Tiji, is derived from the Tibetan term "Tempa Chhirim," which translates to "Prayer for World Peace." Monks from the Chode Monastery in Lo-Manthang perform intricate ritual dances wearing elaborate costumes and masks. These dances, performed over three days, narrate the myth of Dorje Jono and symbolize the triumph of good over evil, purifying the region of malevolent spirits.
Spectators from around the world gather to witness this unique cultural event. The Tiji Festival not only serves as a spiritual cleansing for the community but also as a vibrant display of Mustang's rich heritage and communal spirit. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, witness traditional Tibetan customs, and explore the stunning landscapes of Upper Mustang. The 2025 Tiji Festival promises an unforgettable experience, blending ancient rituals with breathtaking natural beauty.
